KDKA-TV ran a story yesterday on city council prez (and former public works chair) Darlene Harris getting streets and a retaining wall around her Spring Garden house renovated by the city, to the taxpayer tune of $108, 406. "I work to help the people – not to help myself," Harris countered. "I've never taken anything for myself."
The work happened three years ago, when she was on better terms than she is now with fellow North Sider Luke Ravenstahl. (Whose own friend in the Department of Public Works brass got the same kind of work done at his house in June.) In the KD report, DPW's current head takes a public shot at the council president, which isn't something you see often:
"Obviously being the chair of the department and putting a request in for services – I guess that has some undue influence on the decision," Public Works Director Rob Kaczorowski said.
