Steve Twedt has the story: state Sen. Sean Logan, D-Monroeville, is ditching the legislature for what is likely to be a nicer payday at UPMC.

According to a release, Mr. Logan "will lead the integration of UPMC's community relations programs and be a liaison to the many communities served by UPMC's hospitals and programs."

Mr. Logan had served the 45th district for 10 years.

In a statement released by his office, he cited his work in trying to reform voting on budget bills and in curtailing spending on management and travel at the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency.

It is up to the Senate president to schedule an election to fill the rest of Mr. Logan's term, which expires in 2012.

Before being elected to the Senate in 2000, he was the mayor of Monroeville. He is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Law and Justice Committee.

Though the position of "vice president of community relations" is a newly created position, it's similar to one held by U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-McCandless, before he ran for Congress in 2006. Altmire also did some lobbying, and it's just a hunch, but Logan's Harrisburg connections would make him an attractive lobbyist candidate as well.
