Blankenship

No surprise here, given their history, but Huntingtonnews.net points out today that Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship and his allies have chipped in $21,000 to the campaign of former West Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Spike Maynard to unseat Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va.

Blankenship, never a stranger to controversy, is even more of a lightning rod these days as head of the company that owned the Upper Big Branch mine in Montcoal, W.Va., where 29 miners died in an explosion April 5. One would think it would make political sense for Maynard to distance himself from Blankenship, but that would have been an impossible task considering that the two are notoriously close. Might as well take the help, as Maynard badly trails Rahall in campaign cash in the race to represent the Third District, which covers much of West Virginia's southern coalfields.
