The Mitt Romney campaign is formally rolling out its latest slate of Pa endorsements today, four months after releasing its first statewide list.
Most of the names (including Jim Roddey of Allegheny County and former PA3 congressman Phil English of Erie) were already known but the big new ones are congressmen Charlie Dent and Bill Shuster. (A Philadelphia tea party leader is also on board.) The announcement comes as opponent Rick Santorum, despite hailing from Pa, has struggled to get any support from statewide GOP leaders.
SNEAK PEEK – ROMNEY ROLLS OUT PENNSYLVANIA ENDORSEMENTS: Congressmen Bill Shuster and Charlie Dent will endorse Romney at a surrogate press conference this afternoon in Harrisburg, the capital of Rick Santorum's home state. They and other speakers will discuss their support for Romney and, in the words of a Romney campaign official, "stress the futility of Santorum's challenge given his overwhelming delegate deficit." Also appearing at the 2 p.m. event will be Rep. Jim Gerlach, former Congressman Phil English, former Chairman of the Republican State Committee Alan Novak, RNC National Committeeman Bob Asher, Allegheny County GOP Chair Jim Roddey, Delaware County GOP Chair Andy Reilly, Franklin County GOP Chair Dwight Weidman and Independence Hall Tea Party (Philadelphia) leader Don Adams.
UPDATE: The full statement from the Romney camp is below:Boston, MA – Today, Pennsylvania Republican leaders and elected officials announced their support for Mitt Romney. The Pennsylvania leaders and elected officials include new endorsements from Congressmen Bill Shuster and Charlie Dent.
Announcing the additional endorsements, Pennsylvania Congressman Jim Gerlach said, "Governor Romney is best suited to fix our economy. "Hardworking taxpayers across the 15th District, Pennsylvania and America are looking for someone who will fight for them as President," said Congressman Charlie Dent. We've spent four years 'hoping' in this country – now it's time for results. Look at his record and you will see – in both the private sector and in service to the public – Mitt Romney delivers results."
