Lame duck county Executive Dan Onorato is reportedly taking a job with Highmark, the insurance and hospital giant locked in a market struggle with the UPMC health system.
KDKA television reported Friday night that the longtime Democratic office holder will sign on with Highmark as vice president for government relations after leaving office in January. Mr. Onorato, the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for governor last year, chose not to seek a third term as executive. Mr. Onorato could not be reached for comment on the KDKA report. Michael H. Weinstein, a spokesman for Highmark, said in an e-mail, "We do not comment on personnel actions.''.
A lawyer and accountant by training, Mr. Onorato is a former county controller and city council member. UPMC, Highmark’s increasingly bitter rival in a confrontation over the local medical marketplace, made its own bid for political talent recently when it hired former state Sen. Sean Logan in a similar lobbying role.
Mr. Onorato has been publicly reticent on his post-office plans since his landslide loss to Gov. Tom Corbett in 2010.
