With less than a week to go, the little-known race for Commonwealth Court has heated up with a TV ad from Republican Anne Covey slamming her Democratic opponent.

Complete with ominous music, Covey's ad claims Kathryn Boockvar, during her time working on voting rights issues at the Advancement Project, "wanted to spend your tax dollars registering convicted criminals to vote." The ad cites , about a House bill that would have required prisons to provide newly released prisoners with voter-registration forms.

At a press conference this afternoon in which Ms. Boockvar was not-so-subtly flanked by representatives of the various police, firefighter and other law-enforcement groups backing her candidacy, she called her opponent's ad an example of "political games."

"She has chosen to take the low road and violate the judical ethics pledge," Boockvar told reporters. "She tried these same tactics with the law enforcement community, and I'm truly proud to say they endorsed me."

She noted that the 2009 House measure would have spent no additional tax dollars to provide the forms. -- noting that the Department of Corrections at that time already provided voter-registration forms to released inmates as an agency policy.

Still, it was never codified into law, failing to get a floor vote in that chamber.

Boockvar is running her own television ad now as well in southwestern Pennsylvania, where Covey's piece has been targeted. The Boockvar ad, which began running in some areas yesterday, is below.

A request for comment was placed with the state GOP party spokeswoman, who said the Covey camp would call within an hour.

UPDATE: Mike Morris, speaking on behalf of the Covey campaign, reiterated the position from the ad that additional spending can't be justified in the current fiscal environment.

Asked about Ms. Boockvar's statement that the bill had no cost (prior to this reporter checking fiscal note), Morris replied that there is nothing preventing the Advancement Project from distributing voter forms themselves. "It gives insight into her mentality - she doesn't care about what taxes are placed on the people of Pennsylvania," he said.
