As state lawmakers continue to mull what to do next now that the governor has outlined his education reform agenda, one key school choice advocate in the Senate brought in a former U.S. Department of Education official to reinforce that cause.

Former U.S. DOE Secretary Rod Paige joined Sen. Anthony Williams, D-Philadelphia, this morning in Harrisburg and Philly to talk about school vouchers and, more broadly, the idea of school choice.

"We are going to have choice - how many children are we going to lose before we get that?" Paige told reporters.

Parents are demanding choices, he said, with Williams jumping in to note that 30,000 Philadelphia children are on waiting lists for charter schools. Paige added that the state's responsibility is to outline the standards for educating a child; "once we set those standards, the question is how we achieve them?"

Both men said they believe school choice should encompass not only vouchers to help students attend another private or public school of their choosing, but also expanded charter programs and better evaluations to help teachers perform effectively. (All of which are similar to Gov. Tom Corbett's ed plan.)

They also emphasized that they believe that public schools will be able to compete with the additional options, and that ineffective charter schools would be easier to close than poorly performing public schools.

As for the political realities of a disappearing number of fall session days and some lingering uncertainty about support for vouchers in the House, Williams remained confident that a scaled-back education reform plan could still be approved.

"There's a lot of noise here, but there isn't a lot of noise out in the public," he said.
